Khanmigo: The AI Tutor Making Personalized Education a Reality

source: The 2 sigma Problem, Benjamin Bloom, cachecookies.ai

Let's rewind to 40 years ago when Benjamin Bloom introduced a concept in his groundbreaking study, "The 2 Sigma Problem." Bloom demonstrated that personalized, one-on-one tutoring could help average students perform two standard deviations better—effectively moving them into the top 2% of their class. Bloom's research has not only inspired a generation of educators and technologists but also highlighted the stark inequalities in educational access. After all, who has the resources to offer one-on-one tutoring to every student?

Fast forward to today, and the emergence of AI in education has made Bloom's vision more attainable than ever. Sal Khan, founder of non profit Khan Academy, is at the forefront once again with Khanmigo, a personalized AI-powered tutor and teaching assistant. Unlike other AI tools such as ChatGPT, Khanmigo doesn't just give answers; it guides learners to discover the answers themselves with limitless patience.

Khanmigo that has not only as a goal to improve how kids learn but also to change the process by which teachers teach, and parents help. Being a teacher assistant (available in US for free for educators from May 2024) it is designed to streamline lesson planning and reduce busy work, quickly generating engaging materials, quiz questions, student groupings, and hooks.

Why Does It Matter to Me 🦎 ?

Imagine a classroom where AI tailors lessons to each student's needs, adjusting difficulty in real-time. Struggling with algebra? The AI offers simpler explanations and visual aids. Excelling? It introduces more challenging concepts to keep you engaged. This personalized approach fosters deeper understanding and prevents students from feeling overwhelmed or bored.

But AI can do more than personalize instruction. It can bring learning to life! Imagine chatting with Shakespeare, interviewing historical figures, or even conversing with the Mississippi River. What was once science fiction is now possible, thanks to AI. These are real features in Khamingo!

Khanmigo leverages Khan Academy's extensive content library across subjects such as math, humanities, coding, and social studies to ensure top-notch educational support. However, to broaden its reach, Khan Academy has partnered a month ago with Microsoft, utilizing Microsoft Azure AI infrastructure to expand access to these AI tools for educators. Although the extent to which Khanmigo uses datasets from ChatGPT remains unclear, a lite version called "Tutor Me" is available through GPT in ChatGPT.

AI systems are only as good as the data they're trained on, and that data often carries the baggage of historical biases, stereotypes, and discrimination—a reality even tech companies admit. As AI assistants increasingly find their way into classrooms, even helping with grading, it's crucial that educators, not tech companies, steer the ship. We've seen this pattern before: technologies often start with commercial goals before pivoting to education.

But let's not forget the elephant in the room: screen time. Parents are already worried about its effects on kids' well-being. If AI tools mean even more screen time in school, those concerns will only skyrocket.

The Swiss Approach to AI-Powered Learning

While Khanmigo rolls out free access to U.S. educators, Switzerland is cautiously exploring AI in education. The Swiss Teachers' Association, in their paper published last month, acknowledges the potential of AI tools for personalized learning, but raises concerns about biased datasets, ethical considerations, and the need for clear regulations. The conversation continues...

AI Video War: OpenAI's Sora vs. Kuaishou's Kling

The realm of AI-generated video is booming, with numerous contenders like Pika, Runway, and Vidu, showcasing impressive capabilities from simple text prompts. Yet, the spotlight is on two leading models: OpenAI's Sora and its competitor Kuaishou's Kling from China.

Kling distinguishes itself with high-definition 1080p videos at 30 frames per second, up to two minutes long, and an uncanny resemblance to reality. Its prowess in advanced 3D reconstruction of faces and bodies further elevates its accuracy in depicting expressions and movements. Currently in testing and limited to Chinese users, Kling could soon dominate the AI video landscape.

Kuaishou, Kling's creator, boasts a substantial profit of 4.12 billion yuan (approximately $575.1 million USD) in Q1 2024 and nearly 400 million daily active users. A major player in the short video app market, rivaling TikTok, Kuaishou's text-to-video capabilities hold vast potential for education, marketing, and entertainment.

Sora's potential was recently showcased by a director who crafted a music video featuring a digitally generated couple created by Sora's AI. These groundbreaking models are transforming content creation, enhancing storytelling, and democratizing video production. Millions could leverage them for their TikTok, Instagram Reels, or YouTube Shorts accounts.

However, their realism sparks concerns about deepfakes, violent or sexually explicit content, harmful representations, or the promotion of illegal activities. OpenAI is actively working to ensure Sora's safety and ethical use before its public release later this year. This cautious approach could give Kling a competitive edge.
